TRUMSYNT-16

Control reference for the percussion voice: signal chain, parameter ranges, defaults, modulation destinations, presets, and MIDI map.

Signal chain

VCO 1 (SQR/TRI/MET/SIN) ─┐
VCO 2 (SQR/TRI/SIN) ─────┼─► MIX ─► FILTERS (LP/HP) ─► PRE/POST DRIVE ─► VCA ─► OUT
NOISE ───────────────────┘ ▲
CLICK ──────────────────────(parallel, after filters)─┘

8× oversampling + 31-tap FIR decimation on the oscillator stage.
Linear FM is generated inside the oversampled oscillator path before decimation.
Separate decay envelopes: VCO 1, VCO 2, VCF, VCA, Click, Noise.

VCO decay shapes only the pitch sweep — amplitude comes from the VCA. Click is injected in parallel after the filters; noise and click can each bypass the filters.

Quick start

  1. Drop TRUMSYNT-16 onto a MIDI/instrument track in an AU or VST3 host.
  2. Press TRIGGER on the panel, or send a MIDI note, to hear the voice.
  3. Set oscillator, filters, VCA, and click parameters.
  4. Draw a pattern into the PITCH and VELOCITY lanes. Use PATTERN A / B for two eight-step pages, or A + B for a chained 16.
  5. Route MOD A / MOD B to a destination and set per-step depth.
  6. Save with SAVE; recall factory and user presets from the preset display.
  7. Host projects also recall the complete current instrument state. Saving a preset is for reusable sounds and patterns, not required for session recall.

Oscillators

Two oscillators feed the voice. Each has its own level, frequency, pitch-envelope amount, and decay. The oscillator stage runs at 8x oversampling and is downsampled through a 31-tap FIR decimator. VCO 1 can hard-sync and frequency-modulate VCO 2 inside the oversampled path.

ControlRangeDefaultWhat it does
VCO 1 WAVE SQR / TRI / MET / SIN SQR Square (PolyBLEP), Fourier band-limited triangle, METAL (six detuned PolyBLEP squares at non-harmonic ratios), or sine.
VCO 1 LEVEL 0 – 1 0.6 VCO 1 contribution to the mix.
VCO 1 FREQ 1 – 2000 Hz 76 Base pitch of VCO 1.
VCO 1 EG AMT −60 – +60 st 0 Pitch-envelope depth in semitones. Negative sweeps down, positive sweeps up.
VCO 1 DECAY 0.01 – 2.0 s 0.30 Length of the VCO 1 pitch sweep (parameter id vcoDecay).
VCO 2 WAVE SQR / TRI / SIN SQR Square, band-limited triangle, or sine. Sine can be frequency-modulated by VCO 1.
VCO 2 LEVEL 0 – 1 0 VCO 2 contribution to the mix.
VCO 2 FREQ 1 – 2000 Hz 330 Base pitch of VCO 2.
VCO 2 EG AMT −60 – +60 st 0 Pitch-envelope depth for VCO 2 in semitones.

HARD SYNC Off / On Off Resets VCO 2 phase to VCO 1. (METAL mode on VCO 1 does not drive sync.)
SEQ PITCH MOD VCO 1+2 / OFF / VCO 2 VCO 1+2 Which oscillators follow the per-step PITCH lane.

Mix / Transient

Noise and click are independent layers with separate decay envelopes. Each layer can bypass the filters.

ControlRangeDefaultWhat it does
NOISE LEVEL 0 – 1 0 Amount of noise in the mix.
NOISE COLOR −1 – +1 0 One-pole tilt: negative = darker, positive = brighter.
NOISE DECAY 0.005 – 2.0 s 0.041 Independent noise decay time.
NOISE VCF BYPASS Off / On Off Routes noise around the filters when on.
CLICK LEVEL 0 – 1 0 Level of the parallel click/transient, injected after the filters.
CLICK TUNE 20 – 8000 Hz 800 Pitch of the click body.
CLICK DECAY 0.005 – 0.2 s 0.015 Length of the click transient.
CLICK VCF BYPASS Off / On Off Routes the click around the filters when on.

Filters

LP mode uses a Huovilainen ladder model (HNM). HP mode uses a Chamberlin SVF. The section has cutoff, resonance, its own decay envelope, and noise-driven cutoff modulation.

ControlRangeDefaultWhat it does
VCF MODE LP / HP LP Low-pass or high-pass.
CUTOFF 20 – 20000 Hz 5515 Cutoff frequency.
RESONANCE 0 – 1 0 Resonance amount. High values plus drive can self-oscillate.
VCF DECAY 0.01 – 10.0 s 0.30 Length of the VCF decay envelope.
VCF EG AMT −1 – +1 0 Bipolar VCF envelope depth (shaped quadratically, sign preserved).
NOISE VCF MOD 0 – 1 0 Extra cutoff modulation driven by the noise source.

Amp / Drive

The VCA sets the body envelope and output. Two tanh drive stages are placed before and after the filters. The envelope-shape control changes VCA/VCF contour curvature.

ControlRangeDefaultWhat it does
VCA EG 0 – 1 0 Continuous VCA attack time, ≈1 ms at minimum to ≈100 ms at maximum (a continuous fast/slow VCA attack control). Not a level or envelope amount.
VCA DECAY 0.01 – 2.0 s 0.043 Body release length.
UNTZ −1 – +1 0 Envelope-shape / curve control for the per-voice energy contour.
VOLUME 0 – 1 0.8 Final output level.
PRE DRIVE 1 – 10 1 tanh soft-clip before the filters.
POST DRIVE 1 – 10 1 tanh soft-clip after the filters.

LFO

A free or host-synced LFO running alongside the sequencer, with one routable destination. Retrig restarts the LFO on each step. MOD A and MOD B can also target LFO RATE and LFO AMT.

ControlRangeDefaultWhat it does
LFO WAVE TRI / SAW / SQR / SH TRI Triangle, saw, square, or random sample-and-hold.
LFO RATE 0.01 – 20 Hz 1.0 Speed when free-running. Ignored when SYNC is on.
LFO AMT 0 – 1 0.5 Depth into the selected destination.
LFO SYNC Off / On Off Locks the LFO to host tempo (PPQ).
LFO RETRIG Off / On Off Restarts the LFO phase on every step.
LFO DEST see destinations OFF Same destination set as MOD A and MOD B, excluding LFO RATE and LFO AMT.

Modulation sequencer

Two eight-step pages (Pattern A / B) over four lanes each. PITCH and VELOCITY shape the voice directly; MOD A and MOD B are free modulation lanes whose per-step value is the depth into a chosen destination. Each lane can have its own 1–8 step length on one page, or 1–16 steps when A+B is chained.

LaneRangeDefaultWhat it does
PITCH0 – 12060Per-step pitch offset, routed by SEQ PITCH MOD.
VELOCITY0 – 10.8Per-step level. Also drives click level and (via sensitivity) VCF decay.
MOD A0 – 10.5Per-step depth for lane A, sent to its destination.
MOD B0 – 10.5Per-step depth for lane B, sent to its destination.

Transport & clock

PATTERN A / B
Select the visible and playing eight-step page. Loading a preset always starts on Pattern A.
A + B
Chain both pages into a single 16-step sequence. Saved with presets and host state.
LANE LENGTHS
PITCH, VELOCITY, MOD A, and MOD B can each run 1–8 steps on one page, or 1–16 steps when A+B is chained. Independent lengths are applied per lane.
CLOCK MULT
Sequencer speed against host clock: 1/5, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 1×, 2×, 3×, 4×, 6× (default 1×).
SWING
0 – 0.5. Delays off-beat steps for shuffle.
TRIGGER
Fire the voice immediately.
RESET
Reset the sequencer position.
VELOCITY ZERO
Set all 16 velocity steps to 0.

Modulation destinations

MOD A and MOD B each pick one destination; the per-step lane value sets the bipolar depth. The LFO routes to its own destination independently. There is no patchbay. Routing is fixed.

Presets

Presets are complete instrument states stored as .ts16 files: sound, pattern data, modulation routing, lane lengths, and A+B chaining. Use SAVE / DELETE / INIT and the PREV / NEXT buttons on the panel. User presets are never overwritten by installs.

Factory: ~/Library/Application Support/Liljeholmen DSP/TRUMSYNT-16/Presets/Factory
User:    ~/Library/Application Support/Liljeholmen DSP/TRUMSYNT-16/Presets/User

Loading a preset always starts playback on Pattern A. The A+B chain state is stored alongside the preset; older files without it load with A+B off. Host sessions save and restore the same instrument state, so a project can reopen with its current sound and pattern without first saving a separate user preset.
